Waterhouse – Penelope and the Suitors (1912) B.jpg

What timeless story does the 1912 painting by John William Waterhouse depict?

Before we reveal the correct answer, try to figure it out for yourself using these questions:

  • What characters (or figures) do you see?

  • What are these characters doing?

  • In which direction is each character looking?

  • Who is the main character of the story? And why?

Yes, the main character is the woman in the red dress sitting at the loom.

Let's continue:

  • What is the woman in red, our main character, doing?

  • What is her expression?

  • What is she working on?

  • Why is she ignoring the figures behind her back?

  • What are the figures behind her trying to do?

  • What gender are these figures?

Yes, the male figures are trying to attract the woman in red, to get her attention. Essentially, they are courting her. But why is she ignoring them and immersed in her work? Through the window, we see a landscape:

  • What exactly can we see through the window?

  • What kind of landscape is it?

  • Could you determine where we are?

We are in Ithaca. Do you know who came from Ithaca? He was a famous warrior, a clever man, who:

Yes, that man is Odysseus, so who is the woman in red?

If you guessed that it is Penelope, you are correct.

  • What do you know about her?

  • What is the message of her story?

  • What did she weave on her loom during the day and then unravel at night for three years?

A shroud for Odysseus.

A shroud is a garment used to dress the dead for the grave. Even after the Trojan War ended, Odysseus did not return home and was considered dead. The Trojan War lasted nine years, and Odysseus spent another ten years returning home from it. Why? You can read about that in the Odyssey itself, which is read by both students and adults at the Great Works Academy.

Queen Penelope, his faithful wife, waited for him all those years. Of course, she was pressured by suitors who were interested not only in her beauty but also in the Kingdom of Ithaca, its wealth, and its power. However, she remained faithful to her husband. She asked the suitors for time—until she could weave a shroud by hand for her supposedly dead husband, no one could court her. But she wove the shroud by day and unraveled it by night. Eventually, her impatient suitors discovered this. But just then, Odysseus himself enters the scene in disguise.

Penelope's name is therefore associated with loyalty, courage, and the creativity to face the perils of marriage (relationships).

Look at the painting one more time. How has your perspective on it changed after discovering its meaning? How do Penelope's story and message speak to you today?

The name of the painting is Penelope and the Suitors.

Waterhouse – Penelope and the Suitors (1912) B.jpg

"… who wandered far and wide after he had sacked sacred Troy,
he saw the cities and learned the minds of many men,
in his heart he suffered countless sorrows on the sea,

striving to save his own life and bring his companions home.

He yearned for this immensely, yet he could not protect his companions;
for they perished through their own arrogance and blindness of spirit,
wretched fools, when they ate the cattle of Helios,

the son of Hyperion, and he destroyed their day of homecoming.”

The introductory canto from Homer's Odyssey.
